Live Drawing: Victoria Station
PROCESS
Victoria Station, also known as London Victoria, is a central London railway terminus connected to the Victoria Underground station. It is London's second busiest railway station after Waterloo, handling around 1.5 million people each week, most of whom are commuters from London's suburbs and the southeast of England.
The most distinctive feature of Victoria Station is its constant bustle and energy. The facilities cater to a diverse array of individuals: commuters, travelers, police, guards, cleaners, shop staff, and long queues in front of ticket machines.
To keenly observe the movement of people, various positions within the station were explored. The station was divided into three distinct sections for sketching, with the middle of the station serving as the primary vantage point.
Oil pastel was chosen as the medium for this work. Its wet, solid texture allows for a sticky, shadow-like spread, ideal for capturing the essence of the station. The transient population and the station's atmosphere were expressed by smudging the oil pastel, with intense black strokes representing the dense crowds and bustling stores. The creation process was intuitive, guided by the movements of the objects and people within the station.
